Then again, this might be what I need right now. A little patch of space to focus my awareness on. Something to pay attention to and be present with.

By the way, if you’re into comics or Zen (or both), I would recommend this podcast interview with John Porcellino. It’s good stuff.

Other phrases associated with ketchup conversations are:

You should see if you can afford ketchup.

You shouldn’t be afraid to use ketchup.

Don’t worry. You’re good enough to use ketchup.

Now is the time to buy ketchup.

I would buy ketchup if I was you, but I have kids, etc.

Here’s the best way to put ketchup on your hot dogs.

I could go on.

I’m of two minds about this.

On one hand, the teacher is giving a valuable lesson. Following instructions is important. I’ve heard a lot of complaints from anthology editors about artists who are incapable of following submission guidelines. This either creates more work for the editors or makes the submission unusable. Also, when printing books it’s critical to follow the printer’s guidelines or the books will not come out well (if they come out at all).

On the other hand, we can get so caught up in following rules that we miss important opportunities that have nothing to do with any rulebook. Sometimes the rules need to be challenged, especially if the rules arbitrary or outdated. It doesn’t help that art can be subjective. It’s not like a computer program that fails the instant it hits a bad patch of code.

So take from this what you will.

Zander Cannon recently did an excellent comic about being an independent comic artist. In it he mentions how he didn’t like thinking of himself as an artist because it implied a value judgment on the things he made. For some reason, I’ve never thought of the word art as having a value judgment. There’s good art and bad art, but it’s all art. I used to be shy about thinking of myself as an artist, but that was more because I hadn’t made that much art yet. Once I had a few hundred pages of comics under my belt, I was like, “Okay, I’m an artist.” That’s why I can call myself an artist in these comics without flinching.
