Unexpected Guests

Cockroaches freak me out.  They are not only gross and full of disease, but the best way to combat them is to maintain an OCD level of cleanliness that is difficult for me to sustain.  I am using other precautions (repellants, etc), but keeping a clean kitchen is the most difficult for me.

Then again, this might be what I need right now.  A little patch of space to focus my awareness on.  Something to pay attention to and be present with.

By the way, if you’re into comics or Zen (or both), I would recommend this podcast interview with John Porcellino.  It’s good stuff.

  1. Bobby says:

You’ve given me a good idea. I left the house for work today without cleaning the kitchen–for, like, the third day in a row. It’s a wreck.

And I was just thinking I need to focus on mindfulness practice again.

I’m going to take your advice!

  2. Rene says:

Better make friends with them, because once they’ve discovered your dwelling, they exploit your hospitality, whether you give it to them or not. They are here to stay.

  3. Ryan Dow says:

Can’t I at least pretend that keeping a clean house will make a difference? Ah well, it’s not like trying to keep a cleaner kitchen will hurt anything.

And good luck with the kitchen, Bobby! My kitchen is usually a wreck too. Although my goal is to have the place clean before nightfall, since roaches are mostly nocturnal (the nest hasn’t gotten big enough for me to see them in the daytime).

  4. Daniel Olson says:

    That sucks. Good luck!

  5. Holy crap! Cockroaches freak me out.
