I feel a little vulnerable talking about the bread and cheese cycle. Vegetarianism attracts a lot of criticism (mostly in the form of cheap jokes), and I don’t want this comic to skew anyone’s view on vegetarianism. It’s hard not to feel like a representative when you’re part of such a small group.
The thing is I’ve never met anyone with a perfect diet. Life just gets in the way sometimes. I am trying to get better though.

*Jaw drop* Ryan, that’s almost as bad as the ramen school of vegeterianism! There is no reason to do this to yourself. There are so many fabulous vegetarian and vegan TV dinners out there, and if you know where to shop they can really inexpensive. If you want something simpler, you can get bagged iceberg for cheap, add dressing and your favorite fruit. Trail mix and boxed cereals with soymilk also rock. Also, back when I was vegan exploring Judaism I discovered that flat Matzo bread, celery and humus are an awesome alternative to bread and cheese.
The temptation to take you grocery shopping to help you create a vegetarian/vegan emergency/convenience food storage for days like those is so great, it’s insane. Drop me a note or call my office line, if you want to do this.
*This has been an alert from the Foodie Emergency Broadcasting System.*
Unrelated note: Are you planning to go to the Zinefest planning meeting?
I will agree that there is no reason to do this. It’s a bad habit I’m decided to break. And I do eat other things during these phases (apples, carrots, cereal, pasta, etc.), it’s just that the majority of my entrees involve bread and cheese. I am slowly building a stockpile of canned/frozen ready-to-eat foods for times like this.
I will be at the Zinefest meeting tonight. Thanks for reminding me!
I have a peanut butter sandwich rut myself.
Man, I haven’t had a peanut butter sandwhich in a really long time.
What you need is to learn the art of leftovers. Shannon will make a huge meal on the weekend and freeze it up for later use.
I do this all the time. In fact, if I don’t cook on the weekends I pretty much don’t cook at all. The problem happens when I have busy weekends.
haha great comic.
Mmmmm… bean burritos.
I tend to eat a lot of bread myself. I like how you drew the panels. Good stuff.
The only thing better than bean burritos is bean-and-rice burritos.
Ah, ramen: one of the six cartoonist food groups (the other five are drinks, protein, hotdish, canned and frozen goods and pizza).
Lovin’ the spiral panel.
I’m not too big into ramen anymore, but I think everything else works for me!
No bread and cheese for you while we’re in Columbus. I really like that spiraling-into-oblivion panel. Good choice.
