Candlelight Service

Candlelight Service

I was going to expand this into a two-part comic, saying how the candlelight service is now a bittersweet experience.  When I was a kid, there was a lot of excitement and anticipation that came with it (we opened presents when we got home from the service), but as an adult its kind of sad, because there’s a real feeling that my home town is dying off.  The adults just keep getting older, and that there aren’t enough kids in the area to carry the torch.

But I decided not to go through with.  It’s Christmas, for goodness sake!  Might as well end a comic on a happy note (for once).  So have a Merry Christmas, one and all.

  1. It’s been forever since I’ve been to a candlelight service.

  2. Merry Christmas Ryan!

  3. The part I like the best about the candlelight service is how it starts from just one candle and everything else is dark. Then slowly more and more candles are lit and the light grows. And eventually the whole church is light — but light from candles. It’s all glowing and beautiful.

(And then the hot wax drips down on my hand and over onto the pew in front of me and I worry that the poor person in front of me is going to sit on the wax and ruin his or her good clothes.)

  4. I like the last panel.

Ah, that brings back quite a few memories!

    Hey guys,

Sorry to go so long without commenting. I had been away from the Internet throughout Christmas and needed to catch up on some things when I got home.

Scott – The funny thing is that we didn’t go to the candlelight service this year due to problems with the weather.

Dan – Merry Christmas to you, too.

David – Thankfully the pews are wide enough that the wax just goes on the floor.

Jenny – Thanks! I was a little worried that I hadn’t pulled that last panel off.

Jon – Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

  7. Jon Sloan says:

Thanks Ryan, hope you did as well. The comment about your home town dying out hit home, that’s pretty much the state of my home town up north as well.
