  1. Steve says:

    Nooo! Carl! ><

  2. Jen says:

Looks like Carl got his feelings hurt and just lashed out.

He seemed to totally ignore the point of the e-mail, saying that he was too attached to Ryan, not that he was in love with him

    Oh well

  3. fluffy says:

Carl has some sort of personality disorder. He asks Ryan to write down what’s bugging him, and when he doesn’t like what Ryan has to say, he aggressively twists things around and makes Ryan feel bad.

I’ve known lots of people like this. It’s basically a no-win situation.

  4. Ryan Dow says:

To Steve – Yeah, it’s sad.

To Jen – I don’t think he was more misinterpreting the point of the e-mail than ignoring it.

To fluffy – Calling it a personality disorder seems a bit harsh. Sometimes these things can be situational. I can think of at least one time when I tried to lend a sympathetic ear to someone and then lashed out at them because I didn’t like what they had to say. It doesn’t mean I do it to everyone, though.

  5. Akaydia says:

This is horrible! It must have really hurt to get that email.

I think that the one thing that Carl needed was a confirmation that you were going to remain friends . However, Carl did seem very manipulative- though I’m not sure if he is aware of it or that he does it on purpose or out of need.

I’ve been in both positions- I have a friend who I’m addicted to and who constantly hates how clingy I am and will show up at my door when I’m about to give up on the friendship. At the same time I had a friend who was so clingy that I stop all communications with her. In both situations I wasn’t a very nice person, but I did try my best- though it doesn’t stop how guilty I feel about it.

I hope that things turn out better in the future. That email just really stings.

  6. Ryan Dow says:

I’d like to say we’ve all been in both positions, but I must admit its been really rare for someone to be clingy about me. I’m really not complaining.

Hopefully things turn out better in the future for you as well.

  7. fluffy says:

Okay, fair enough, it’s just that based on what you’ve portrayed of him in the comic, he seems to have some sort of personality disorder, where he’s trying to have things both ways. It’s not that it’s a one-time lashing-out so much as a systemic pattern which leads to mutually-destructive behavior.

  8. Ryan Dow says:

There’s definitely some inconsistent behavior. I don’t know any guys who are “just friends” and try to give each other foot massages.

  9. Rembrand says:

The foot massage immediately reminded me of the discussion in Pulp Fiction. I see what you mean, it’s getting on very intimate territory.
Weird though, how inconsistent and full off duality people are. Nothing like in most movies or comics, where personalities are clear and defined.
I think you’ve crafted a great story here, very human and recognisable.
