Here’s some trivia about this page:
- I changed the name of the Zen Center for this story. Mainly to make it fit more easily on a small sign.
- The bowl on the table in panel 2 is called the Dana Bowl. Dana means “generosity.” Its kind of like the collection plate at a church.
- The bib-like garment that the character is wearing in panels 3 and 4 is called a Rakusu. It is worn by people who have committed to following the precepts of Buddhism through a ceremony called “Jukai”. Yeah, I know it sounds like a cult, but there really is no pressure to commit to this stuff.
- The bow in panel 4 is called “gassho”. It’s kind of an all-purpose gesture of gratitude.
- The shelves on the far right are for storing people’s shoes. It is customary to take one’s shoes off before entering the meditation area.
- I could not for the life of me find the exact quote on the bulletin in page 5, so I fudged it. If anyone knows the exact quote or author, comment or e-mail me.
- I’ve greeted at the Zen Center for nearly three years. I may need to resign, though. I’ve been pretty undependable lately. I can never seem to keep track of when the third Sunday of the month is. Oh well.
