Carl’s All Out of Gum
Click here to go to the beginning of this storyline.
Sorry if you were expecting a rational argument over the merits of gay marriage, but as you can see, Carl is too angry to be rational right now.

Actually, I am glad that Carl has a chance to confront this guy. Not exactly the most tactful method, but it seems to get the point across. I’m hoping this will knock the truck driver down a few notches, knowing that people will be hostile to his overt display of his “righteous viewpoint” and that he better watch his step.

Those who are not sensitive to how volatile this issue is for us in the gay community are often shocked when we respond with uncivil anger. It’s an easy thing for someone who knows no gay people to say that “Marriage=man + woman.” But it hurts and severely devalues our relationships. It tells us we are unequal / unworthy of basic legal recognition and protection.
What interests me most is your lead character’s blank “what the f—?” expression in the last frame. It’s as if he never considered how gay people might be hurt by words like these. I am very interested to see how your character learns/grows after witnessing this conflict. Thanks for taking on this important issue.

I like what you’ve got going here, dudes, keep it up.
The main reason I’m writing is to ask you: Your Project Wonderful ad asks: “Have you ever been in love?” Is this a reference to the musical group Pizazz? If so, bizarre reference. If not, I recommend checking them out. In any event, keep the comics going.

Ha! Give it to him, Carl! ^^
I totally agree. It’s easy for straight people to offend gay guys n girls. It’s horrible if that happens on purpose, but it’s also really sad and alarming if it happens cause they just don’t really think about it.
Maybe they don’t want to hurt somebody, but they also don’t think far enough to avoid it!
So “I didn’t mean to hurt anybody” is no real excuse.
*sighs* We live in the 21st century, but I’m afraid that it’ll take a long time till we’ll really have something you could call ‘equality’.
Let’s hope and work to get there asap
(Sometimes I hate english ^^ Sry for the language, it’s late here~)

To Jon - Yeah, it wasn’t very tactful, but it was somewhat understandable.
To John - You pretty much nailed what’s going on through Carl’s mind. As for the WTF stare, I was going for more of a “Should we get involved in this, Rick?” stare.
To Eric - Haven’t heard of Pizazz. I’ll check them out. The ad refers to this comic -> http://ryandow.com/ic/2008/02/17/have-you-ever-been-in-love/
To Stephan -> Your English sounds fine to me. I wish I could write in another language.

Why does this guy even have a sign up to begin with? What does he think it’ll accomplish? The only people who’ll like it are people who already agree with it, Everyone else is either going to be indifferent or enraged by it. If anything he’ll only motivate gays to fight that much harder for marriage rights.
*Sigh* some people…
If only the little buddha would show up, he’d be able to diffuse the situation.

Awesome amount of comments! Obviously you’ve hit on a hot topic here Ryan! I can’t wait to see how this pans out.

You hit the nail on the head, Z. Displays like that usually produce the exact opposite reaction than what is intended. I don’t know what possesses people like that to sanely think that by seeing that, a gay person is going to say,”OMG! I’ve been living a hateful lie!!! I see the light, and now I must become an uber-conservative straight Christian!!!” Please and a half, people! I am a Christian myself, but at least I see the idiocy of shoving one’s personal values and mores down other people’s throats. I am a huge believer in The Golden Rule that Christ handed down. I just wish some of these other unenlightened people would figure it out as well.
Great stuff again, Ryan! Keep up the great work! It was cool seeing you (albeit briefly) at MicroCon!

In my mind he put the sign up because he wants his voice to be heard. He’s hoping to inspire like-minded individuals to also make themselves heard and fight back against an increasingly permissive society. Or something like that.
It’s really hard not to make a straw man out of the guy.
