Too Gay

Too Gay

I realize that by making references to Revenge of the Sith I’ll be dating this story, but there’s a reason this comic takes place in 2005.

By the way, there will be some strong language in the next two to three pages. Parental discretion is advised.

  1. Too gay? So I take it that Carl isn’t completely out of the closet?

  2. Ryan Dow says:

I can see where that would be confusing. Like all of Carl’s friends, Rick knows that Carl is gay (he was within hearing distance of this conversation). I’m just portraying him as someone who feels the need to assert his heterosexuality from time to time. Hopefully I’ll be able to clear this up later in the story.

The expressions that you and Carl hit Rick with are great! Nice little non-verbal to show Rick that he needs to extract his head from another body location. It just kills me how some people can be that callous just because they aren’t completely comfortable with who they are.

    Ha, too gay? ^^

Art is gay, mh..? Sometimes it is! But that’s more a (stereotype) compliment to gay guys~
However, I really love your comic. (Lil’ Buddha ftw ^^)

I really enjoy the style of the drawings. Kinda raw, very minimalistic and reduced to the most important expressions. Ha! Comics = art -> art = gay -> comics = gay?
Damn, looks like that was my comming out~ ^^

    Greetings from Vienna, Austria

To Jon – To be fair, I was kind of torn on how to portray Rick. I wasn’t sure if I should make him slightly insecure or a jokester who’s poking fun at Carl. I ended up going the insecure route.

To Stephan – Thanks for the compliments! How’s Vienna? As for art/comics being gay, yeah, its a stereotype, and its really not true. I’ve gotten to know a great number of talented straight artists, and a few gay ones as well. I do worry about the youth of today associating creativity and self-expression with being effeminate and “gay”. You can be creative and manly dammit!

  6. Jon Sloan says:

Darn right, art can be manly. If you have any doubts, just grab yourself a volume (or three) of “Muscles And Fights” (plug, plug, plug.:))! Heck, Picasso was quite assertive in expressing his manliness, from what I’ve read.

Seriously, though. You nailed the insecure aspect. It’s just his extremely poor choice of phrase that makes him look the idiot. It reminds me of Kevin Smith talking about the “idiot character” Banky from “Chasing Amy” that he gave all the neaderthal, uninformed phrases to say in that movie to voice the steroetypes, yet he was still a likable character, even though a bit too much of an A-hole.

I’m looking forward to the reaction to all this, especially from Carl if he’s going to make Rick look the fool, or tear him a new one verbally.
