Ryan Meet Smeegle

Ryan Meet Smeegle

This is page 7 of an ongoing graphic novel that begins here. Page 8 will be uploaded on 11/11/2007.

This was a difficult but fun page to draw. Establishing shots like in panel one will always be a challenge for me. Because its not just about perspective and shading, its about capturing the soul of a place. I’m not sure I’ve captured the soul of the suburbs in this comic. Maybe its because the suburbs have no soul.

Also, you can check out a comic I did for Steven Stwalley at his blog.

  1. I agree that the suburbs have no soul. I grew up in the ‘burbs and didn’t have any sort of world view until I moved to Madison, WI.
An elaborate establishing panel is always a very difficult panel to draw. I just finished one yesterday and it took me three hours!

  2. Oh and by the way, I love your Everett True strip! I am going to try and get one posted at some point soon.

I’m not sure how long that first panel took to draw. I was on Jury Duty last week and drew most of this page while I was waiting to be assigned to a case and during court breaks. There’s a lot of downtime when you’re a juror.

  4. Jury duty? That blows. However, downtime is good!
I’ve only been assigned jury duty once and it was in Maricopa County, Arizona. I didn’t have to go, because I was moving back to the Twin Cities.
