I originally had a different comic drawn for this week’s update. It was a bit of a whiny downer strip, and after hearing what happened to Eric Lappegard, it seemed petty. I hardly know Eric, but I was a regular reader of his daily strip Schmapples. Then I heard about his severe spinal injuries from a car accident, and well, I was shocked. It made me contemplate how fragile life is. So I scrapped the current comic and made this one. Yes, it’s sappy and schmaltzy and will probably look super cheesy in the fullness of time, but I don’t care. It echoes a lot of what I was thinking about the accident.
The Fragility of Life
Transcript
I sometimes take the fragility of life for granted. I know that I am not invincible. But it’s frightening how quickly our sight, our hearing, our ability to walk can be taken from us. But the human body is also known for its resiliency. For its ability to cope and adapt. So there’s always room for hope.

I hardly knew Eric, but met him at my first Cartoonist Conspiracy meeting. It’s nerve racking to realize how quickly one’s life can change.
