Food

Food

Wow. This has to be the least autobiographical strip I’ve done so far. Not only have I never baked a loaf of bread by myself, but I’ve also never made Risotto. I have worked with phyllo, though, once when making a spanakopita casserole. Phyllo is a tissue thin dough that dries out literally seconds after it is exposed to air. As you can imagine, it is a bit difficult to work with.

This comic spawned from a passage I read in a Minnesota Zen center newsletter. In it, the head teacher likened Zen practice to baking bread. You’ll never achieve your goal if you keep peeking into the oven. It was an interesting simile and I tried to think up other “food as life” similes. This comic contains the best I could come up with. As for the punchline, well, I think its a reflection of how busy I’ve been keeping myself as of late.

Sometimes I wonder if life is like baking. Where peeking into the oven too soon can ruin the bread. Or is life like making rissoto? Requiring constant attention and care. Perhaps life is like a sheet of phyllo. It dries out and crumbles before you know it. Or is life like Macaroni and Cheese? Cheap an easy. Actually, cheap and easy sounds pretty good right now.
