Fortune Cookie Wisdom

Fortune Cookie Wisdom

This comic was based on a fortune cookie I had last week. It read, word for word, “What the mind does not allow, the heart does not grieve.” I’m still trying to figure out what that means. Does it mean that the heart cannot grieve what the mind doesn’t understand? Is there any true boundary between heart and mind? Does the heart just accept the limitations of what the mind cannot allow? Am I over-thinking this?

I originally hand-lettered this comic, but I didn’t like the way it looked so I went back to font-lettering. Otherwise, I don’t have much to say about this comic.

What the mind does not allow, the heart does not grieve. Wow. I have no idea what that means.

I love trying to apply rational meanings to fortune cookies, but sometimes I think they’re vauge on purpose so that you apply it to your own life as you see fit. (So, overthinking isn’t really possible.) It’s like an exremely vauge self-help video.
To me, “What the mind does not allow, the heart does not greive” could mean that people should have power over their emotions, and to go into things based on clear thinking, not whims. (Or, making decisions based on inpulse can lead to later regret.)
But, then again, maybe I’m under-thinking it.

I think that if means convince yourself that you don’t need something than than your heart will not be sad about having it. For example, if you think that you don’t need friends and that other people are annoying, then you will not be sad about being alone.

  3. Anna Tramell says:

Maybe it means… that denial of something is a way to deal with it, emotionally. Though… that wisdom doesn’t seem helpful, somehow

  4. Heather C says:

I think it’s about how you can’t grieve for things you don’t allow in your mind by entertaining or dwelling on them. What these sorts of things are is anyone’s guess.

  5. Catmi says:

It just means, if your mind doesn’t think about some thing, your heart won’t be sad or happy about it.
