Temerity

Temerity

This idea for this comic came about while I was listening to some Nightwatchman. I was really impressed with the boldness and confidence in his lyrics. I still think this comic reads best while listening to “One Man Revolution.” The boldness in his music made me want to write about the boldness of others I’ve encountered in my life. All of the English majors, philosophy buffs, Buddhist lay priests, and amateur cartoonists I’ve ever known have the following in common: They do what they do not for financial gain or an easy life. They do it because it’s what they want to do. For them, it’s the right thing to do.

By the way, I realize that I’m making a sexist generalization with “Women become English majors… Men become philosophy students.” Of course men can become English majors. I’ve known a handful of them in my life (I was a few credits short of being one myself). As for female philosophy students… . Well, I’ve never known any female philosophy buffs, with the possible exception of Girl from Cat and Girl (currently my favorite webcomic, by the way). If you or anyone you know is a female philosophy whiz, send an e-mail to ryandow@ryandow.com.

I’ve always admired the kind of temerity that drives people to become Buddhist lay priests. That moves young men to become English majors. That spurs young men to study philosophy. The colorful force of will that makes people rise above the air-conditioned comfort of department store mediocrity. I don’t think I’ve ever been that consistantly passionate about any one subject. Well, except maybe comics.

I’m female and 28 with 1 M.A. degree in philosophy, a not-quite-M.A. in Sustainable Development, and starting a Ph.D. in philosophy this fall.

    We exist! :)

Wow. I forgot how sexist this comic was (I made over four years ago). I didn’t mean to imply that women couldn’t be philosophy majors. I think I just didn’t know any women doing it at the time.
