You Need Friends

You Need Friends

The idea for this comic has been brewing in my head for a while. It started with What Color is My Parachute? — which stressed the importance of networking over sifting through Monster.com and the newspaper for jobs (in other words, friends will help you find a job). Then I read some Internet dating advice that you will have a better chance meeting potential dates at social gatherings with your friends (in other words, friends will help you find a mate). And its generally accepted by everyone (including me) that friends will help you through dark times.

I think that friends are great, but I also think that feeling “you need friends” creates problems. It can make you clingy and desperate and not that much fun to be around. Besides, there are times in everyone’s life when you have to live without the close comfort of friends (especially when you’re new to an area). And there is nothing wrong with that. Ok, that’s enough soapbox for now. I really like the way this comic turns out (even though the lunch bag shifts around too much and the character’s face never maintains a consistent shape). There’s a sense of confidence and maturity on display here that I really like.

Friends will help you find a job.
Friends will help you find a mate.
Friends will help you through the dark times.
You need friends.
This line of thinking has done me more harm than good.
Because sometimes you have to spend your forty days in the desert.
Sometimes you have to wander the forest of trials alone.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
